Enid is a city in Muskogee County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,815 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Muskogee County. The town was founded in 1881 by Enid natives John and Fannie Sheppard and named after their daughter, Enid Sheppard Hinton. The first post office in Enid was established on November 3, 1881, by J.F. Sheppard with the name "New City". On July 8, 1907, the town changed its name to "Enid" after then-Governor George Arthur Ennis. In 1916 the original school building burned down and was replaced with a new one that still stands today; this building housed both public schools until 1957 when they merged into one district under the name "Muskogee City Schools". In 1954-55, Mrs. Lula Belle King renovated and enlarged her home on Third Street which served as an interim courthouse until permanent construction could be completed at what is now known as courthouse Square (now part of First Avenue). Mrs King served as mayor from 1955-1959 when she resigned due to health problems caused by polio; Mayor Harry Bridges served as acting mayor for two months before he took over permanently from Mrs King on September 6th 1959 In 1960-1961 there were 2 tornado outbreaks including one that killed 9 people in Ada and another that struck Enid killing 3 people On October 25th 1964 a tornado touched down just east of town damaging or destroying homes & businesses for miles around & leaving 12 dead along with many more injured
