Enid is a city in Muskogee County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 15,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tulsa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Enid Chamber of Commerce has been one of the largest employers in town since it was founded in 1907. The city was named after Enid Worthy, wife of Representative James Worthy. The first known permanent settler in what is now Muskogee County was George Hennig who arrived with his family on July 24, 1867 from Missouri. He and his family are considered pioneers in this area as they were among the first to clear land and build homes west of present-day Tulsa on what is now east side of US 66/US 71. There were several other early families that settled here before 1871 when Major John Cavanaugh organized the towns around today's Tulsa and built a courthouse and trading post there which became known as Cavanaughville (later renamed Jenks). In 1881, Jno Aitken established an agricultural colony near present day El Reno with fifty head of cattle. This began the establishment of ranching activity which continues to this day along with manufacturing and other businesses today including Enid-based Miele Home Appliances Co., Amoco refining company located downtown at Third Avenue South & Broadway Boulevard; FirstEnergy Corporation's Stroudsburg facility; and various medical equipment suppliers such as Baxter Healthcare Group AG (Baxter) and Mayo Clinic LLC (Medtronic). One reason why Muskogee County saw so much growth during its early years was because transportation wasn't available to bring people back and forth between cities like Tulsa or Jenks so people had to farm their way around or take wagons downland for goods arrival by train at night then leave again for home during the day. However, once railroads came through town things changed rapidly! In 1893 the feeder line from Jenks ran into trouble due to waterlogging so President Grover Cleveland ordered Colonel Ephraim Cooke to build a new line running parallel south from Fort Worth via Claremore all the way down into Muskogee County! By 1896 there were over 100 businesses operating on this new improved railroad system making Enid one of northeast Oklahoma's most important cultural centers! Mining also played an important role during these early years with many settlers coming out specifically to prospect for coal seams near modern day Owasso and Bartlesville but no proper mines ever developed however considerable amounts remain unrecorded beneath ground until recently thanks largely to technological advances!! Today’s economy is based largely on agriculture however some major companies still operate within downtown Enid including Miele Home Appliances Co., Amoco refining company located downtown at Third Avenue South & Broadway Boulevard; FirstEnergy Corporation's Stroudsburg facility; ICTech Solutions Inc.; Seagrams whiskey brand Distillery #1 closed in March 2014 following years operations inside building used by store employees prior thereto; Baxter Healthcare Group AG (Baxter) ; Mayo Clinic LLC (Medtronic); Plains Allyn Incorporated - Geico insurance providing services within business complex currently undergoing renovation/updates etc.; numerous local art galleries throughout town offering approximately 350+ exhibits annually plus numerous others utilizing space inside larger churches etc... typical activities happening each week include music performance by local band 'The Golden Grahams' sometimes outdoors adjacent public park or community center event featuring local cuisine typically available either before or after performance... more information about current events can be found online at: enidsocietyorg
Enid was founded in 1870 by a group of Mormon converts. The town grew quickly and soon became a major agricultural center, manufacturing goods such as flour, bacon, shoes, and soap. The town prospered until the 1930s when oil exploration began in the area and Enid's economy took a nosedive. In the 1970s, however, Enid began to experience a renaissance as an engineering and technology center due to its location on the Newly created Oklahoma State Highway 87 corridor. Today, Enid is one of the most prosperous cities in Oklahoma with a population of over 200,000 residents.
