Enid, Oklahoma is a small city located in the far east side of the U.S. state of Oklahoma. The population was 707 at the 2010 census, down from 889 at the 2000 census. The town was founded in 1901 by Will Rogers and his family as a trading post on the Enid River. It became a community after oil exploration began in 1907 and production increased in 1915 when Enid-Shreveport Oil Company was founded to exploit that discovery. The company built an open-air oil refinery near town and its citizens developed an economy based on manufacturing goods for export to other countries, including Mexico, China, and Japan. The town's heyday came during World War II when it became one of the largest military installations in what was then Midwest United States; it housed up to 50,000 troops during that time. The post office closed in 1951 and most of the buildings were destroyed by fire in 1957 but some have been reconstructed over time. At its peak (1951), Enid had a population of 20,000 residents; today it has under 10 thousand residents due to loss of jobs and suburbanization within easy commuting distance of larger cities like Tulsa or Wichita Falls. Today many people are involved with history through several organizations which focus on local history: Enid Historical Society (EHS), Museum of History & Industry (MOHI), Cherokee Nation Museum & Cultural Heritage Center (CNMCH), Presbyterian Church–Enid branch (PCE) and First Baptist Church—Enid (FBC-ENI). EHS maintains a large collection of historical materials from both inside and outside the community as well as archives dating back to 1901 which is open for research purposes online as well as on site where there is regularly scheduled concerts/festivals about local history topics throughout the year.
