Enid, Oklahoma is a city in Choctaw County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 3,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Choctaw County and the home of McAlester Air Force Base. The name Enid comes from the Kiowa word ɛníd which means "place where water flows." In 1892, a post office was established in Enid by A.C. Smith and named after Miss Anna May Hinton of Wichita Falls, Texas who had come to town to promote irrigation projects on her farm there. The first store in Enid opened its doors on December 5, 1893. The first pharmacist in town was Dr. John Witherspoon who moved into his building on Main Street in 1895. By 1902, three general stores were open: one operated by Rufus Hargrave and two by Fenton Keyes & Son; soon more stores followed suit with various proprietors opening businesses until 1907 when it was decided that an incorporated city should be formed with all these businesses under one roof.. In 1911-12 construction began on what would become McAlester Air Force Base and Enid became known as the "City of Planes". By 1923 over 100 aircraft were based at the base including Douglas DC-3s used for bombing raids against Japan; during World War II this number grew almost tenfold to 1,500 aircraft! From 1942 until 1945 local production also went into production for use at Ball Aerospace Corporation's facility located just south of town – this led to nickname "Arsenal City" due to airframe production being conducted throughout much of OKLAHOMA (including parts produced here) during WWII! After the war ended most planes were sold off or scrapped but a few remain today as artifacts at Nellis AFB near Las Vegas Nevada!
Enid was founded in 1907 by the Enid brothers, James and Orville. They named it after their sister, Enid, who had been born in 1881 in a small town in western Colorado. The brothers had emigrated to Oklahoma Territory from what is now Kansas City, Missouri, when they were teenagers. In 1907 they founded the town of Enid on the edge of the then-new Lumber District of Oklahoma Territory. The first post office was opened in 1909. The city growth that followed initially depended on agriculture; however, this changed with the opening of the new Interstate 35 corridor in 1978 which connected Enid to Wichita Falls, Texas and Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas. This opened up more opportunities for businesses and led to an influx of people into Enid. Many new residents moved into the city because of its strong economic prospects and access to quality education and infrastructure. Today, Enid is a thriving metropolis with a population over 100,000 residents and growing each year. It has become well known for its arts scene which includes several local museums as well as world-renowned art exhibitions throughout the year. Additionally, it is home to two universities - Oklahoma State University and Tulsa University - as well as numerous business parks and other important infrastructure developments
