Enid is a small town located in the Cleveland County Seat of Muskogee, Oklahoma. The population was 2,611 at the 2010 census. The town has a rich history dating back to 1881 when it was founded by farmers who set up shop along the banks of the Arkansas River. They named their new settlement after Enid, a major city in central Oklahoma. At first, most of the residents worked on farmsteads adjacent to the river, but as oil and gas drilling increased in popularity in the region, many people decided to relocate to Enid because it had become an attractive place to live and work. The town’s growth began slowly but steadily over time. By 1922, Enid had become an important center for oil production in western Oklahoma. In that year, local citizens donated land north of downtown for a municipal airport which would serve as the primary transportation hub for the town. The airport would be enlarged and renamed Muskogee-Enid Airport in 1945 after Mayor John Dillard’s donation of $10,000 towards its construction. Although Enid experienced some initial setbacks during World War II due to its remote location, it soon emerged as one of Tulsa’s leading commercial centers during that time period. This success helped lead to advances throughout local economy such as development of libraries and shopping malls which continue today within walking distance of nearly all residents ofMuskogee-Enid Airport
Enid was founded in 1902 by Alma and Amos Enid. The town was named for Alma's older sister, Enid. The first post office in the town was opened in 1903. In 1907, the townsite of Enid was added to the Oklahoma Territory. The name "Enid" was chosen because it sounded like a word from the east side of Houston, Texas. The oil boom of 1901-1902 led to an increase in population and development near Enid. One important event that occurred in 1905 was when a group of men who had prospected for oil discovered gas hydrates under the town square. This discovery generated much excitement throughout the region and soon led to construction of several wells around town. The first school open in Enid was built on what is now First Avenue West just south of Center Street on May 3, 1906. It housed grades one through six and served as a model for future schools across Oklahoma Territory. In 1916, George Wickersham became president of Oklahoma land commissioners; he appointed Valeria Granger as superintendent of schools within his agency responsible for overseeing all public education within the state capital territory.. Granger successfully implemented her vision for renovating and expanding many local high schools into prestigious colleges/universities throughout central Oklahoma during her ten years at the helm (1920-1932). Although she never held any elected office within government or industry after leaving teaching service, Granger is considered one of Tulsa’s most significant pioneers in postwar school reform efforts hereabouts
