Elk City is a town in Stephens County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 814 at the 2010 census. It lies on the edge of the eastern edge of Stephens County and is bordered by Haskell to the east, Haskell to the south and west, and Canadian Creek to the north. Elk City is named after a local rancher, George Elk. The first post office in Elk City was established in 1885. The first store was built near present day Elm Street and Main Avenue. The community began as a small hamlet with few residents in 1890 when a road connecting Haskell and Canadian Creeks were completed. By 1896 there were three stores, one barber shop, two churches ( Protestant and Catholic), four schools (grades 1-12), one hotel and two residences. In 1898 an addition to the original town was developed along Elm Street between Maple Avenue and US Highway 96 where developers erected homes for themselves as well as businesses such as an ice cream parlor, livery stable, grocery store, bakery etc.. The first post office in Elk City opened on November 15th, 1885 under name of Medicine Lodge National Bank Note No.: 5479 A1 from Territory of Wichita Falls over which Stephens county exercised jurisdiction at that time On December 26th 1886 mail service began from Fort Smith via Canadian Creek across what is now Tulsa OK before being discontinued in 1899 due to rider on appropriations bill In 1907 Elk City had 7 residential buildings including 2 frame buildings In 1912 there were 10 residential buildings including 4 frame buildings In 1914 there were 12 residential buildings including 6 frame buildings In 1916 there were 14residential buildings including 8frame structures In 1918 only 3residential building remained although it served until 1951 as part of Fenton Supply Co

Today, Elmhurst Park Recreation Area is home to more than 1,500 people who enjoy fishing, hunting, camping, biking and hiking; while Fairgrounds Park contains several tennis courts and playgrounds for children; downtown offers retail stores including ranches operated by local ranchers; and art galleries dotting every block throughout downtown withOklahoma's only continuously functioning movie theater (the old Elks Club).
