Elk City is a small town in the US state of Oklahoma. The population was 4,463 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Oklahoma City metropolitan area. Elk City is located on the eastern edge of Tulsa County and lies east of Interstate 35 and south of McAlester. The first people to live in this area were Native Americans who hunted deer and other game around what is now Elk City. The city was named after an elk that had been shot near town by a hunter from nearby cedarville in 1892. In 1907, a group of settlers known as The Harts offered $10 per acre for land within present-day Elk City limits; this offer led to its incorporation as a municipality on February 14, 1909.
