Elk City is a small town in Muskogee County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,829 as of the 2010 census. Elk City is located on the southern edge of the Muskogee Indian Reservation and is part of the Tulsa metropolitan area. The first European to visit Elk City was Captain James Cook in 1778 and he named it "Eagle's Nest." In 1881, George W. Bonney sold land in present-day Elk City to John A. Brown for $200 per acre. As detailed earlier, during World War I, members of the U S Military stationed at Fort Riley built an airfield northwest of town using materials they had acquired from nearby auctions held by Field Marshal Haig’s General Headquarters staff for use by American troops fighting on distant battlefields around Europe As local economy boomed during post-World War II boom period with heavy military presence throughout Western Oklahoma Territory following war's end, many businesses closed or moved away as people consolidated their holdings into large multi-family dwellings positioned along arterial streets such as Elm Street/Fourth Avenue South & Main Street Downtown; thus developing core city blocks now known collectively simply as "Downtown". Development continued apace with numerous new high school buildings being erected throughout inner city blocks north & east facing arterial streets; creating Arts District - now core business district dominated areas imitating big box stores prevalent prior to late 1990s when larger landed estates returned to physical infrastructure following major redevelopment efforts spearheaded by Mayor Bill Graves beginning circa 2000 thru 2005 led ultimately by current Councilmember Don Elkins [1] - resulting finally – albeit incrementally – return to traditional open space character characterized pre-2000 cores while inducing significant retail investment growth quo decade or so ....... Today muchMusic corporate headquarters complex gradually encroaches [into] currently most active central business district although existing Third Ward storefronts - once home to several major locally owned restaurants & bars situated just southwest corner Third Avenues West ( intersecting Cherry Streets) between Market Place East (formerly Academy Drive) & main street dating back over 100 years remain extant provide considerable civic amenity.... Elk City, Oklahoma is a small town located in the eastern panhandle of Oklahoma. The town was founded in 1907 by settlers from Texas and Kansas. The original name of the town was Elkton, but it was changed to Elk City in 1912 after the local post office was renamed Elk City. The population of Elk City peaked at around 10,000 in 1920, but has since declined steadily. In 1980, the town had only 1 resident. Today, Elk City is a ghost town with only a few buildings remaining from when it boasted a population of 10,000. The history of Elk City begins with its namesake: an elk that roamed the area for centuries before being killed by hunters. After this event, settlers began to arrive and settled in the area around Elk City. By 1907, there were over 50 people living in what is now Elmira Township. By 1920, however, Elmira Township had shrunk to just 10 residents and Elkhart County had been formed; so all activity within the small community stopped. However continued influence can be seen today as businesses such as Walmart and KFC have opened up shop near downtown Elmira and closed down elsewhere in the township due to low population levels or lack of space within their stores: currently Walmart occupies almost two-thirds of what once existed inside Elmira Township limits! Today there are no active businesses within sight or sound of downtown Elmira thanks todrawn-down populations combined with years without any new development pushing people out into other parts of nearby towns; this situation has actually created some nice open spaces just outside city limits thanks to declines even further within those boundaries!
