Oil production increased significantly during World War II due to demand from both America and Japan; however, this led to environmental degradation that ultimately impacted Elephant Ford River which supported many local communities adjacent to Elk City....After World War II ended there was little notice given either by government or industry alike of what would happen next; instead everything seemed focused on building up resources again following reopened woundters.....By 1960 only 2%of employed people were dependent upon petroleum products...oil prices quadrupled between 1970-1980 resulting primarily from war contracts.......In 1980 executive Order No 1 created Monumental Area Review Committee that determined no area inside Monumental Zone should be developed without prior approval from President Ronald Reagan.......This order effectively stopped any further growth within Monumental Zone.....In 1990 management transferred responsibility for operations at Elephant Ford River Valley refinery back into hands of operators......By 2000 Wyoming Refining Company had shuttered their plant leaving 4%of employment still reliant upon petroleum products...Refineries continue operate today but are now used mainly for natural gas production.........As recentlyas 2006 there were plans underway by developers interested in revitalizing downtown which would have included demolishing much of infrastructure associated with oil production dating back more than 100 years ..........................................Oklahoma Historical Society released report documenting 535 applications received for demolition permits through 2016....... Developers eventually dropped their plans after discovering lack viable replacement plan
