After hostilities ended, many returning servicemen took up farming or other careers within Elk City's local community so that it would not become lost in wartimeowntown withdrawals; however, some businesses did not reopen until well into the 1990s due to prohibition-era zoning changes which limited alcohol sales downtown even though most properties had been rebuilt since then primarily with commercial use in mind In November 1951 when Oklahoman John Fenton was elected sheriff following a campaign slogan "Crime will be down here", he brought new life to downtown with programs such as painting public sidewalks and building benches along Eighth Street between Elm and Haskell Streets - these initiatives helped erase any remaining vestiges of old lawlessness that may have resulted from bootlegging operations taking place during those years just south of town limits near present day Springdale Avenue ElksCity today has an active BDS (Bureaucratic Department Services) staff which provides all forms of customer service including but not limited to: phone customer service; credit inquiries; account opening/closing; late payment notices; insurance claims processing Elk City experienced some revival during the early 2000s when more people decided to move intotown because property values had increased rapidly due to oilfield development throughout much of Oklahoma ensuing from production increases associated with both EnronTexaco's Eagle Ford Shale wells as well as horizontal drilling also carried out by others such as Chesapeake Energy Corporation since Permian Basin supplies began becoming available . However , this growth stopped abruptly around 2006 when construction began on Interstate 35W bypassing town limits concurrent with activity related to nearby Refineries #1 & 2primarily affecting east side neighborhoods adjacent to I-35W rather than downtown areas particularly those located immediately north & south Of I-35W . This project displaced tens if not hundreds if not thousandsof citizens who chose instead elkcity living either outside tho [the bypass] zone or within core city boundaries

Elk City was founded in 1907 by J.C. Nichols and his brother-in-law, George W. Guthrie. The city was named for the elk that lived near the original ranching operation. The first store in Elk City was called the Nichols & Guthrie Store, and it opened on North Main Street. In 1911, the city constructed its first water tower, which served as a drinking water supply for the town until 1955. In 1932, Elk City became one of five cities in Oklahoma to receive a municipal government charter from then Governor James Franklin Steele. The new city government provided services such as police and fire protection, street cleaning, and public works. In 1988, Elk City voters passed an amendment to their city charter that granted the city a mayor form of governance instead of a council-manager type system used by other Oklahoma cities. At that time, Mayor Donnie Lopez became the first Latino mayor of Elk City. In 2002, Mayor Lopez announced his plans to close down the old post office building on West Main Street after years of complaints from residents about its noise levels and falling property values due to deferred maintenance issues. After months of deliberation and community feedback, he decided against closing down the building and instead plan to renovate it into more affordable housing options for future residents
