In the early 1920s, Elk City was a thriving city with a population of over 10,000. It boasted some of the most impressive gunsmithing and firearms manufacturing resources in the country. A large part of this success came from its location at the confluence of two major rivers: the Arkansas River and the Canadian River. These waterways created unique opportunities for trade and transportation, which made it easy to get products from one region to another. This also allowed guns to be shipped across country quickly and easily. This prosperity didn't last long however, as World War II began and Elk City was soon faced with a challenge. The city was located on military property, so all guns were confiscated and used for war purposes. This had a significant impact on gunswivels history in Elk City; many of the existing firearms were either lost or not able to be used during wartime due to their functionality being impaired.

Ek City is a small town in Payne County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 514 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Muskogee Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Ek City were the Wichita and Arapaho Tribe. In 1881, a post office called "Ek City" was established, but it never got very far because there wasn't much traffic between Payne and Muskogee County. In 1907, the Great Plains Electric Railway came through Ek City and built a line from Tulsa to Muskogee via Ek City. This made Ek City one of the most important towns on that railway because it allowed goods to be transported quickly and easily between those two counties. In 1912, a school district was organized in Payne County and named after Mrs. Anna Ladd (the founder of Pan American Broadcasting Company). That same year, the first electric light Bulb went into use in EckCity when an individual named Harry Karp took delivery of a Sylvania bulb from Detroit. In 1923, William Nixon became mayor of Payne County and he decided that Ek City would be its new capital because there weren’t any other places within range for him to go during his term as mayor. He also set up shop in this town so that he could continue governing Payne County from home instead of having to travel all over town to do so. One year later, Nixon died suddenly while still serving as mayor which left his son Wm., Jr., as mayor for only six months before he too died suddenly while still serving as mayor! Finally, on January 3rd, 1925 Harry Downing became Mayor of Ek City after being elected by popular vote! Downing served until he resigned due to health problems on December 11th 1925* (*This date has been incorrectly reported as December 12th throughout history.) After Downing's resignation however – Samuel Prentice took over as Mayor! Prentice served until his death on November 4th 1951*. *Samuel Prentice did not actually resign; however upon his death no new elections were held so he effectively ceased being Mayor effective December 11th 1925.* Consequently – Elk city had its first ever female mayors- Mrs Anna Ladd (1912-25), Mrs Harry Karp (1923-31), & Mrs Samuell Prentice(November 4 1951 - November 4 1951)

The Elk City area was first settled by Native Americans in the late 1800s. The first European to visit the area was José de la Vega, who landed on the present-day site of Elk City in 1827. Spanish traders and settlers started arriving in the area starting in the 1830s, and by 1840, there were more than 100 people living in the area. In 1845, ranchers began settling in what is now Elk City, and within a few years, over 1,000 people lived here. By 1870, the town had increased to 3 miles wide and 10 miles long with a population of 20-30 people. By 1880, there were more than 400 residents living here. After World War II ended, Elk City experienced growth as businesses came to town for agricultural purposes. Businesses continued to grow until the early 2000s when oil exploration began to take hold in the region and businesses closed down as a result. Today, much of downtown Elk City is still empty due to its lack of industry or tourists choosing not to visit during this time period
