Elk City is a city in Oklahoma, United States. The population was 31,878 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Stephens County. The name "Elk City" comes from Elk creek and the City's location at the confluence of Elk Creek and Canadian River gives it its nickname as "The Gateway to Canada". The first people to live in what is now Elk City were Paleo-Indians who hunted small game along the streams that run through town. They built their villages near water sources so they could get water for their fires and cook their food. In 1867, Pawnee traders arrived in what is now Elk City with horses and other animals to trade land for goods such as horses, tobacco, maize, dogs, and blankets. By 1868, there were over 200 settlers living in Elk City when gold was discovered on the Canadian River.. In 1875, a group of men led by George Hinton established a post office in what is now ElkCity; this became known as Hinton Post Office because it served all of Stephens County. In 1912, oil was discovered on Kiowa Peak but no wells were drilled until 1925 when J C White began drilling his Eagle Ford well which resulted in the birth of Cowboy Town; today part of Midtown Tulsa. After World War II ended, many farmers moved into town looking for new opportunities; Elmira Drive was developed as an entertainment district featuring hotels and theaters that attracted Texan celebrities like Dean Martin and Jerry Lee Lewis during the 1950s & 1960s while downtown remained largely residential until 1978 when construction began on Midtown Tulsa which replaced much of downtown ElkCity including much of Cowboy Town with high-rise buildings including The Renaissance Tulsa hotel/ tower which opened in 2002 named after global entrepreneur Jay Z . Today ElkCity has experienced rapid growth due to its proximity to Interstate 40 (the only road running through town) jobsites within walking distance along with several shopping malls located within minutes' driving distance such as Walmart supercenter (opened 2001), Sam’s Club (2001), Lowes department store (2002), Macy’s department store (2003), Sears mall (2004) plus numerous restaurants including Steakhouse Depot(2005) - home of Chick-fil-A - Tyson’s chicken restaurant(2006), Papa John’s Pizza(2007) – one stop shop for pizza delivery - OKC Wings restaurant(2008) - Bedrock Brewery[2009] brewery serving up craft beers throughout town since 2006 - Billy Bob Thornton museum(2010). Today there are more than 100 businesses providing services such as truck stops where travelers can restock before continuing on their journey or staying overnight}; however most residents are still engaged primarily in agriculture or service industries making up nearly 60%of total employment while just 10%of workers reside inside city limits

In 1907, oil began to be drilled in the area and there was an increase in population due to this new industry; however, it wasn't until 1916 that electric light began to be installed in downtown Elk City proper). By 1921, electric lights were also being used on all streets within Elkhorn County including Elk City proper (although some businesses still relied on candles). In 1932-1933, construction began on what is now known as Memorial Stadium which served as home field for both local teams (the Cowboys and Redskins) and for national football games involving the United States during World War II (eclipsing earlier stadiums such as Soldier Field)). The stadium would eventually become one of America's most popular sports venues; hosting numerous events over the years such as NCAA championships (the first ever held at Memorial Stadium), Super Bowls (three times), Wimbledon tennis tournaments and more!
