Elk City is a small city in south-central Oklahoma, United States. It was founded in 1907 by James W. Elk and his family. The city has a population of 14,925 as of the 2010 census. Elk City is the county seat of Haskell County. The first people to live in what is now Elk City were the Wichita Apaches who moved there from central Mexico around 1820. They were followed by another group of Apache warriors who settled in the area between 1825 and 1830. A Mormon missionary, George Custer, fought near present day Elk City on July 29, 1875 while on his way to Fort Sill where he was to lead an Indian war against the Kiowa and Comanche Indians. His body was found three days later at Big Muddy Creek west of town. The town name may be derived from this event or from nearby Elmwood Hills which had been established as a cattle ranch by James W." In 1907, James W. Elk started settlement in what would become known as ElkCity with his wife Lula and their three children: William ( Billy), Jimmie (Jimmie), and Willie (Willie). The family lived on a 640 acre farm that they developed into a small city with five blocks square containing over 20 businesses including two banks, one grocery store/akery, four barber shops/beauty parlors/restaurants, two druggists/pharmacies/florists etc., schools (one public and one private), churches (two denominations) including First Baptist Church which served as the first courthouse building in Oklahoma; one movie theater; six hotels; eleven rental apartments; two post offices; nine stores including hardware stores and seven restaurants; twenty-six homes built before World War I remain standing today within modern borders of downtown ElkCity - some have been restored while others have been replaced with new construction since then In 1912 when ElksCITY erected its own independent school system that included grades PreK through 12th grade it became one of America's leading cities for education with nearly fifty high schools also functioning within its boundaries teaching students from PreKindergarten through 12th grade plus vocational training programs for young adults As more families moved into central Oklahoma during the 1920s they began developing new neighborhoods such as Mayflower Heights off US Highway 277 just east of downtown which attracted talented architects such as Lloyd Wright who designed many famous buildings throughout Tulsa County including Pawnee National Monument and Hefner Mansion When Interstate 70 was completed bypassing Tulsa all northbound traffic entering or exiting OKLAHOMA turned onto Interstates 80 & 90 traveling directly thru downtown ElmCity bypassing Tulsa becoming 'The Loop' metropolis quickly emerged once again Cowboy country gradually transitioned back into rural economic life until finally 21st century changes brought about increased suburban development characterized by large single family detached homes subdivided into several levels street names like Hickory Oaks Highlands Anthem Ridge Professional Street Musicals are popular events taking place throughout Downtown each year culminating with an Outdoorfest parade Today much like it did over 100 years ago citizens celebrate Independence Day every weekend featuring concerts at Elm Cities Community Hospital lawn theatre located just east side Main Street opposite old post office
The Elk City, Oklahoma region was inhabited by the Sioux and Cheyenne before being taken over by the Europeans in the 19th century. After years of Spanish colonization, the area became part of Texas in 1846. The new United States acquired it as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848. The area was named after James Fenton, a commissioner who negotiated that treaty. In 1861, Fort Donelson was built on what is now Elk City Boulevard to protect settlers from Apache attacks. It remained an American military installation until it was destroyed by a fire in 1902. In 1907, Elk City became one of several towns incorporated into Tulsa County. That year also saw the opening of its first school system and commercial growth began throughout the town. By 1912, Elk City had a population of over 10,000 people and there were plans to make it an urban center with streetsigns identifying different neighborhoods. However, those plans never came to fruition due to World War I and economic depression that followed. In 1925, Tulsa County merged with Oklahoma Territory to form next door Kansas Territory during President Calvin Coolidge's New Deal administration; this made Elk City become one of few remaining U.S.-controlled territories within Kansas Territory (along with Topeka). The territory experienced rapid growth following World War II as agricultural production increased thanks to post-war defense spending and development around Wichita Falls; however, much of this activity left little impact on local economy until after Indian Removal when most inhabitants moved out or were forced onto reservations through force or violence (the last group being done under territorial governor John Wagoner). In 1960, Shawnee National Park was established adjacent to southeastern portion of city limits; this led to significant population increase at city limits as visitors increasingly visited national park rather than their individual homes which often had no access to trails or visitor centers beyond basic infrastructure such as water pipes and lights (residents still enjoy access to both attractions today). This period also saw major changes for downtown including construction of several large office buildings including One Centerpointe mall and renovation/replacing many streetlights throughout town (still taking place today). In recent years various redevelopment projects have been underway within city limits such as a mixed-use project known as "Eve" which includes residential units above ground level along with underground parking garage beneath site;[1] new light rail line service connecting town center directly with Tulsa Central Station via two stations located near intersection of Elm Street & Market Street;[2] redevelopment near FirstEnergy Stadium known as "Fenway";[3][4][5] live music festival called "Oklahoma BluesFest" held annually outside stadium since 2013 [6];[] revitalization effort announced for downtown core known as "Civicimagine".[7][8]
