Elk City, Oklahoma is a city in McAlester County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 7,959 at the 2010 census. At one time it was the county seat of McAlester County. As of the 2010 census, Elk City had a total area of , all of it land. The first people to live in what is now Elk City were three groups of brothers and sisters who came from eastern Kansas in 1881. They named their community after their home state – Illinois – because they thought that would be more likely to recognize them as Americans than any other location in McAlester County. The town began to take form when the railroad arrived in 1907 and started supplying goods and services for the surrounding rural communities. By 1912, Elk City had an hotel and two stores. In 1917, a post office was established at Elk City; it remained in operation until 1957. In 1909, construction began on what is now First National Bank Tower; it became operational that year and remains one of OKC's most iconic landmarks today. The tower served as both a bank headquarters and courthouse until 1978 when its functions were transferred to the new McAlester County Courthouse Annex downtown. That building still stands today (along with several other structures) as part of First National Plaza development east of downtown OKC which plans call for redevelopment of much Downtown business park including over 100 buildings totaling 4 million square feet (390 thousand sq m). In 1925, Tulsa businessmen John Ayn Rand developed riverfront property north of town along Arkansas Avenue for $2 million dollars ().Rand used his profits from developing this land to finance construction of Wichita State University's Main Campus which opened in 1928-29; he also donated land to OU for use as campus housing (). When OU moved into its current main campus location near present day Interstate 45/State Fairgrounds across from downtown OKC in 1949-50 (), Rand's philanthropy again paid off as he received significant financial compensation for his exclusive rights to use university lands within city limits (. Today part or all of Wichita State University's main campus can be found within city limits). In 1927-28 there was also construction begun on what is now Chickasaw Hills Shopping Center just southwest corner Water Street & 2nd Ave NW.; this center became operational that year and remains one OFOKC's most popular shopping destinations today (). It replaced an earlier shopping complex known as Buffalo Gap which had been built on abandoned Indian reservations just northeastof town opposite US 63 / Canadian Pacific Railroad tracks () by JOE ELLIOTT & SON Incorporated (& later known simply as "Buffalo Gap" ).
