Elk City is a city in the US state of Oklahoma. The population was 5,890 at the 2010 census. Elk City was founded by American Indian chiefs in 1881 as Fort Kiowa, and became a town in 1907. It is named after an elk which once roamed the area. Elk City is located on the Arkansas River, about halfway between Tulsa and Oklahoman cities of McAlester. The first town in what would become Elk City was founded by American Indian chiefs, most notably Chief Wahoo (1881-1915). On July 11, 1907, Elk City was incorporated as a town with a population of 154 people. In 1911, the community changed its name to Fort Kiowa and began marketing itself as "the Elks' Town". In 1932, Fort Kiowa closed down due to budgetary problems within the United States Army. The city continued to grow rapidly until it reached its peak during World War II when it had a population of 627 people living in 103 buildings including 10 military barracks and 2 airfields. During World War II, the city saw an increase in employment because of war production plants set up along the Arkansas River near present day Elmwood Park Boulevard and I-35 south of downtown Elk City. These plants produced munitions such as aviation gasoline and aircraft parts for use by Allied forces overseas; these projects also generated significant economic development within Elk City through job growth throughout 1942-1944 especially around Elmwood Park Boulevard where businesses like J C Penney & Company expanded their operations into what is now known as Elmwood Village Shopping Center east of I-35/ Old Hwy 87 South across from KFC chicken restaurant etc.. After World War II ended however all production ceased except for some incidental activities like storage at nearby Gorman County Airport until 1957 when it reopened under new ownership after being sold to Air America Airlines with plans to combine services at Gorman County Airport with Tulsa's George Bush Presidential Library currently situated on site making this one of largest airports west of Wichita or Kansas . Although several local businesses were still functioning post WWII they slowly died out due to competition from larger metropolitan areas such as Tulsa or OklahomaCity.. In 1951 Ft Kiowa reopens again but this time operates only as museum providing tours daily 9am - 4pm
