The Smith family operated a grocery store and post office here until 1924 when they moved to McAlester, Oklahoma. In 1932, the post office closed due to lack of customers. In 1937, the town had 7 residents and it had its first school open for grades 1-4. By 1940, there were 12 residents in Elk City and it had its first police officer named Harry Sisk who Serveed from 1941-1945. By 1951, there were 27 residents in Elmira but only 3 people lived here permanently In 1955, John Burchill became mayor after being elected as an independent candidate He would serve until he was replaced by Marshall Day in 1971 On October 25th, 1957 at 4:20 PM Marshal Day made history when he became the first Mayor of Elk City when he was elected over Democrat Lloyd Beardsley with 50% of the vote
The Elk City area was first settled by the Kiowa and Comanche Sioux in the 1840s. The town was founded on the site of what is now Elk City, Oklahoma, in 1881. In 1907, it became a city.
