The history of airguns in Elk City, Oklahoma goes back to the early 1920s. At that time, there were only a few handguns being made in the state and Airguns Ltd. was one of the first companies to bring firearms manufacturing to the town. The company manufactured shotguns and pistols as well as airguns. In 1951, Airguns Ltd. merged with Rifled Barrels, Inc., creating a company that continued to produce firearms until 1997. Airguns Ltd. was founded by two men who had both worked at Smith & Wesson Firearms in Indianapolis, Indiana. John Hargrave and Clarence Kapp were the primary engineers behind Airguns Ltd.'s products. The company's products were originally designed for use with .22LR cartridges, but it soon became evident that these pistols could be used for other calibers as well. By 1957, Airguns Ltd.'S products had been extended to include air rifles of all types and sizes. In 1967, Airguns Ltd.'s president Neville Chamberlain died suddenly after a long career in business management which included many years at Smith & Wesson Firearms Company in Indianapolis, Indiana where he had served as vice president from 1945-1950 inclusive (he started at Smith & Wesson when it was still named Topeka Rifle Works). With Chamberlain's death, Nevil's son Clive took over his father's business responsibilities and also began expanding the company into new markets around the world; this included sales operations in China during 1978-1981 under the name Chinese Glauber Arms Co., LTD.; export operations beginning in 1984 through ArmaLite Internationalexport AG; joint venture production with Italian arms manufacturer Beretta throughout most of 1987; finally taking over full ownership of ArmaLite Internationalexport AG when Beretta left its participation in 1988). Elk City, Oklahoma is a small city in Muskogee County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 3,890 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Muskogee County. Elk City was founded in 1881 by settlers from Illinois and is one of the oldest cities in Oklahoma. The city has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen classification Cfa), abbreviated "Cfa" on maps. The first townsites were established near Elk Creek in 1879 by men who journeyed overland from Illinois to explore what would become Oklahoma Territory. They named their new settlements for animals that had participated in their journey: Elk City for a white elk that had led them to the creek; Coal Hill for a black bear that helped carry goods over the mountain passes; and Indianola for an American black bear that balanced logs on its back while going into hiding during the Indian Wars. In 1881, Elk City was laid out as an town by order of Governor James Swayne and became the county seat of Muskogee County when it was created from part of Tulsa County. By 1907, however, Muskogee County's population had decreased so much that Tulsa County was reorganized into five districts: east-central Tulsa (now Osage), west-central Tulsa (now Pawnee), north-central Tulsa (now Stephensville), south-central Tulsa (now Stillwater), and central Tulsa (now Jenks). In 1907, Elk City lost its status as county seat but retained its distinction as a commercial center with several large stores including Joplin Grain & Feed Company and Hagerty Hardware Store. The post office at Elk City opened on December 12, 1881 under postal name Coal Hill. It continued operation until it closed on May 25, 1922 due to lack of customers despite being open seven days per week. In 1923, after coming under ownership of Joplin Grain & Feed Company through merger with other businesses owned by Joplin entrepreneur Isaac Colebrooke Jr., the post office reopened as Hagerty Hardware Store under new management before closing again on October 15th 1978 due to changes within industry which eliminated most hardware stores from operation within two years after they opened their doors The closure left Hagerty Hardware Store vacant until 1993 when it reopened as The Gilded Cage Museum store where it remains today with displays about early American history andOklahoma culture
