The city was named after General James H. El Reno who fought in the Spanish-American War and also served as a U.S. Army general during World War I and II. In 1951, the city of McAlester amalgamated with El Reno to form one municipality. The history of El Reno began with three pioneer families who arrived in 1907: the Richardsons from Arkansas, the Heises from Kansas City, and the Dukes from Decatur, Illinois. The Richardsons were among the first farmers to settle in what is now El Reno County and their ranch became an important center for cotton production throughout most ofOklahoma Territory until it closed its doors in 1919 due to overgrazing by cattle ranchers. In 1951, when McAlester merged with El Reno to form one municipality,General James H. El Reno contributed $10 thousand towards this merger which helped make McAlester one of America's largest cities by volume (over 100 million people). Today many businesses located within or near downtown McAlester continue to thrive because of free trade agreements that have been negotiated between America's two major economies since President George W Bush announced his plan for increased trade access through Mexico during his state visit there in 2006
According to the Oklahoma Historical Society, El Reno was founded in 1879 by E.W. Goodyear and his sons as a small trading post on the banks of the Arkansas River. The town became an important center for cattle drives and mined silver during the early years of the statehood movement. In 1907, El Reno was named one of several towns in Indian Territory selected to become part of the new state of Oklahoma. The town's fortunes changed when oil discoveries were made near El Reno in 1908. With more businesses opening up and jobs available, El Reno experienced rapid growth in the 1920s and 1930s. However, World War II brought economic hardships to El Reno, which led to a decrease in population over the following decade. By the end of the 1960s, however,El Reno had recovered somewhat and had regained its former prominence as a commercial center with a significant number of residents working in various industries.
