The name "El Reno" came from an Indian word meaning "the place where there are many watermelons." At its peak, El Reno had a post office, grocery store, blacksmith shop, schoolhouse and several businesses including two hotels. In 1925 it had only 1 store and 9 homes. In 1951 El Reno became an incorporated city with a population of 3,814 residents when it annexed most of McCook County to form its new municipal boundaries. With its current population size (7,928) it has been one of Stephens County's fastest-growing cities since incorporation; it reached 6% growth rate during 2006-2010 alone! According to the 2010 census: There are three schools within city limits: Clarendon Hills Elementary School (K-6), Sparks Middle School (7th-12th grades), and Gerard High School (13th-18th grades). There are also several churches/mosques within city limits: First Baptist Church (Kindergarten through 8th grade), Emmanuel Episcopal Church (9am to 4pm Mon.-Fri., 10am to 2pm Sat.), Sacred Heart Catholic church (10am to 4pm Sun.), Sts Cyril & Methodius Catholic church adjacent to City Hall Park (.75 miles northeast of downtown) and Holy Angels Lutheran parishchurch (.5 miles southeast of downtown). A football field named for retired NFL linebacker Don Coryell occupies part Of Heaton Park which opened in 2009 adjacent To CentralHighSchool across from City Hall Park
