El Reno is a city in Oklahoma, United States. The population was 21,409 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Stephens County. The first white settler in El Reno was Wm. C. Hinton in 1872 and the town was platted in 1875 by John Ralston Purcell. The city became a part of Stephens County in 1907, when it was created from parts of Canadian Township and Union Township. In 1914, El Reno became the site of World War I battlefields when its citizens donated land for an airfield used by American troops fighting on the Western Front. On July 20th 1907 commissioners voted unanimously to name their new post office “El Reno” after Fort Ross Native American Agency where they had been residing while waiting for land deals to be completed (). This action followed weeks of discussion following purchases made at various auction sales across Oklahoma Territory (). Today there are several theories surrounding why “Fort Ross” was chosen instead of simply giving the name “El Reno” to any nearby settlement: one theory suggests that because nearby Tulsa already had a post office under that name (), Fort Ross would have been seen as less threatening (); another possibility suggests that since many early settlers who arrived here were farmers or ranchers (), choosing something such as “Fort Ross” may have symbolized their intention not justto stay put but also develop their holdings further (). Regardless of why it was picked, soon all residentslocating within 5 miles (8 km) began submitting nominations for postal service residency status (). In order for someone else other than themselves () to become responsible for running the post office they first needed approval from commission members () before being granted full citizenship status (); once given full citizenship status anyone could vote on postsurgical issues such as hiring additional staff or approving new mail routes A nomination form () became available online around 1915 making voting easier and faster however due primarily to increasing workloads due To population growth over time commissions decided starting in 1916 not only did citizens need elected trustees rather then commissioners when nominating officers but election distances also increased making it difficult anymorefor locals within 5 miles (8 km) regardless Of political affiliation In 1917 letters patent were issued authorizing El Reno Post Office Incorporation providing: EL RENO POST OFFICE INCORPORATED WILL BE LOCATED IN THE COUNTY OF STEPHENS CHASING TO THE WEST OF THE COUNTY LINE AND SHALL BE A PUBLIC COMPANY WITH POWER TO PROCEED WITH MAIL BETWEEN EL RENO AND VANCOUVER . ALL DIRECTORS ARE ELECTED BY QUorum FROM THE MEMBERS OF THE COMPANY . THERE SHALL BE TWO OFFICERS ON FIRST DAY OF EVERY MONTH A BOARD IS MEETED TO APPROVE OR DISapprove MAIL DUTIES DUE UPON RECEIPT FROM POLLS . EVERY FOUR WEEKS A COMMISSIONER PREPAREES AND DELIVERES AN ANNUAL REPORT SHOWING ACTUAL EXPENDITURES FOR MAIL , PAPER WORK , PERSONNEL MATTERS AND OTHER REALTIME EVENTS . SUCH PROCEEDINGS SHALL BE HEARD BEFORE THE COMPANY SECRETARY AT A MEETING CALLED FOR THAT PURPOSE ON SUNDAY AFTERNOON BY EITHER A JUDGE OR ASSEMBLEMENT AGREEING TO THEIR DECISION.. [Emphasis added] On December 2nd 1917 Commissioners met again sanctioning incorporation which provided: EL RENO POST OFFICE INCORPORATED WILL BE LOCATED IN STEPHENS COUNTY SO LONG AS IT DOES NOT INVADE OSAKA COUNTY NOR DOES IT EXTEND INTO OKLAHOMA TOWNSHIPS . IF EL RENO DOES ANYTHING WHICH MAY CONTAIN IMPLICATIONS OF INTERFERENCE WITH OKLAHOMA TOWNS THEN IT MUST FIRST GET WRITTEN TO OUR GOVERNOR WHO CAN OVERRIDE THEM .. [Emphasis added] On January 4th 1918 Commissioners decided against renewing incorporation due mainly to unavailability of resources (); however this decision did not meanPost Office Plaza closed permanently though services continued intermittently until 1970 shortages caused closure briefly most notable during WWII era When gas stations close off main street leading into towncenter option consists mostlyof travelling east on US 95 Business Loop
In 1907, El Reno was named after Commodore John El Reno. The town was first established as a trading post on the banks of the Arkansas River. In 1909, it became a city and in 1912 it annexed the nearby towns of McAlester and Muskogee. In 1938, El Reno merged with Tulsa to form one municipality.
