When El Reno was founded in 1907, it was the first city in Oklahoma to have a library. The city's only other source of information were newspapers and school texts. In order to provide an education for its citizens, the City Council established the first public library in El Reno in 1907. The library was funded by a $1,000 grant from the Carnegie Foundation. The current library building was built in 1916 and is one of only two buildings in El Reno remaining from the original structure. The building is significant because it is one of few examples of pre-war downtown architecture in central Oklahoma. In 1954, the library moved from its original location on Main Street to its present location on Eufaula Avenue. At that time, it became part of the Tulsa Public Library system and remained so until 2007 when it joined the Wichita Public Library system as part of a larger regional merger. El Reno is a town in Muskogee County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 5,711 as of the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Muskogee County. It was founded in 1885 and named for El Reno, Nevada, then part of California. The post office at El Reno was established on November 9, 1886. In 1908, it became the capital of Oklahoma Territory. The first store in town opened on July 4, 1907. The city's growth came about because of its location midway between Tulsa and McAlester on Route 66. By 1920 there were over 200 businesses in El Reno with a payroll totaling $1 million annually. When Tulsa moved to take up most of the eastern border of Oklahoma Territory in 1907, El Reno followed suit and lost much business activity until well into the 1930s when Tulsa again began to grow rapidly and brought new jobs to the area; however this time by moving downtown rather than annexinglying neighbourhoods like that around their old military installation (now known as I-4). In 1939 services were cut off from Muskogee County due to World War II shortages caused by Japanese bombing raids on the area during that conflict; however since then some aspects have slowly come back online such as electric power being restored in 1954 after years without it and recently a new library/community center being built which has helped revive downtown areas once again including an arts district now home to several galleries/theatre companies along with many restaurants catering to a more diverse clientele than ever before seen within El Reno limits

El Reno was a small town located in Medicine County, Oklahoma, until 1907. It was then annexed by McAlester, Oklahoma and became the city of McAlester. The El Reno post office operated from 1881 to 1907. The town of El Reno was established on the banks of the Canadian River in what is now McAlester County. A sawmill and grist mill were built there in 1881 and 1882, respectively. The first store opened in 1886. In 1907, the city of McAlester annexed part of Medicine County and incorporated it as the City of El Reno. The population of El Reno increased rapidly during World War I due to military duty at Fort Sill and other points along the border with Mexico. After that war ended, many veterans returned to El Reno and its growing economy. The post office closed in 1951 but mail continued to be delivered through McAlester until 1978 when all mail within the city was moved to Kayenta for processing. Today, only a few remaining buildings from when El Reno was a small town remain: a old schoolhouse (#4) and an ice cream parlor (#5). The rest has been replaced by housing developments or taken over by agriculture or other businesses since then.
