El Reno is a city in Muskogee County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 5,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tulsa metropolitan area. The El Reno post office was established in 1907 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1961. The first settler in what is now El Reno was Hiram P. Smith and his family who arrived on horseback from Arkansas on October 11, 1907. The town site was surveyed by J.C. Bemis in 1909 and platted by him on December 12 of that year with a 10-acre (4-hectare) lot given to John Sayers as part of the town boundaries settlement. In 1911 the first school building, which still stands today, was erected; this structure served as the only educational facility for local children until 1913 when a second school opened with instruction in French and mathematics/geography on one wing and music on the other wing. In 1912 an opera house/theaternasium (now seat of the city hall) replaced the original school building; this structure served as both a theater and concert hall for many years before its destruction by fire in 1978. In 1915 W C Hargrave donated land to form what eventually became downtown El Reno – comprising of most of what is now First National Bank Park & Plaza along with several contributing businesses including The grocery store operated by L A Webster from 1925 to 1951; White’s department store closed down after servingEl Reno for over fifty years; The Ford dealership also located downtown between Elm Street & Third Avenue NE closed down around 1979 but has been preserved as “The Ford Theatre” inside First National Bank Park & Plaza since then; finally Tip Top bar which originally occupied space at Fourth & Market Streets NE closed its doors after more than two decades operation though reopened as an independent business known simply as “Tip Top” inside First National Bank Park & Plaza since 1993). This early development can be seen throughout much of downtown El Reno today where small businesses have held sway over larger ones over time becoming integral members of society during a time when such things were not usual or even possible withinMuskogee County at that point in history A post office called Pryor had been established at present day Pryor Creek west side of US 87 north of Muskogee River on November 15, 1907 while supplies were being brought across country via stagecoach service carrying mail between Tulsa City Limits east side and Wichita Falls TX.; information obtained from USGS aerial photo # 96-1030 taken September 24th 1990 shows that although establishment may have occurred earlier than later it would be incorrect to attribute Pryor Creek post office name change to existing townsite designation because there are no buildings shown occupying property once postal address had been assigned - instead it appears likely that new designation came about due to increased competition among mail carriers resulting from growing population density within Muskogee County
El Reno was settled in 1868 by a group of Mormon pioneers. The town grew quickly, and in 1892 it became the county seat of Stephens County. In 1907, El Reno was named after General George Custer, who died in battle at the Battle of Little Bighorn.
