El Reno is a city in Oklahoma, United States. The population was 24,785 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of El Reno County. The area that now makes up El Reno was part of the Creek Nation until 1845 and then joining the Shawnee Nation until 1851 when it became a separate Indian Territory. In 1907, it became a town in what is now McAlester County. On February 17, 1907, El Reno made history by becoming the first city to issue its own banknotes- $5 and $10 denominations- with George H. Custer as its namesake. The city's growth continued through World War II as Army barracks were built there for soldiers stationed in Oklahoma and Texas; during this time, employment opportunities for local residents grew greatly thanks to wartime production at nearby Lockheed Aircraft plants and other businesses located along I-40 east of town. After the war ended, many veterans returned to El Reno while others moved out of state or left altogether due to economic changes which occurred following World War II such as an increase in population density caused by post-war suburbanization throughout much of America which contributed to increased social unrest across racial lines (versus earlier times when most new arrivals were farmers). As postwar apartment developments sprung up throughout central Oklahoma City - including adjacent present day Tulsa - jobs available within walking distance of downtown declined precipitously for locals who instead turned to working elsewhere outside their home cities or commuting long distances for low wages on various forms of public transportation (streetcars being especially popular). However, despite these challenges, several large companies chose El Reno as their regional headquarters over downtown due both its proximity to Interstate 40 and its share of government contracts available within easy driving distance; eventually making it one of downtown OKC's most successful areas over ensuing decades. One notable exception was Northwest Airlines which moved its main operation from Tulsa into another office building on First Avenue south near Interstate 44 before moving all operations out again less than 2 years later due to environmental concerns surrounding Air Quality Index levels above average in that part of town combined with rising Thunderbird Boulevard traffic volumes). During this time period too there also emerged positive trends ensuing from inner city/outer suburb segregation efforts spearheaded by powerful African American businesspeople who had taken advantage of newly created job markets catering specifically towards black workers; this led ultimately to increased integration overall across race lines following Deep South-inspired housing policies pursued primarily by white southern politicians during the late 1960s onwards seeking antipathy towards black Americans living disproportionately among them despite their respective laws guaranteeing equal opportunity under law regardless factional loyalties (i.e., northern Democrats voting overwhelmingly against civil rights legislation enacted during those years while southern Republicans did so largely without consequence)). This period marked significant progressivism both politically and economically within much eastern Oklahoman society generally viewed as having been betrayed by more traditional values represented within mainstream Republican Party circles during previous decades; however some elements within African American communities still harbored resentment towards white southerners even after all these strides had been made offensively against them historically (namely infiltration into local police forces during latter era resulting in numerous high profile cases involving racist abuse / extortion etc.). Despite these negative tendencies however few people actually lived or worked actively against integration initiatives taking place within their neighborhoods simply because they believed such things would inherently lead onlyto conflict rather than progressiv
The city of El Reno was founded in 1881 by George Henderson and his wife, Mary. The city was named after the Battle of El Reno fought on October 17, 1868, during the American Civil War. The battle resulted in a Union victory and drove Confederate forces out of the area. Henderson died in 1892 and his wife continued to live in the city until her death in 1961. In 1930, the City Council voted to annex neighboring towns of Tecumseh and Prague.
