The town of El Reno was founded in 1881 by two brothers, Ulysses and Samuel White. The first post office was established in El Reno on October 12, 1881. The town was named for General George Armstrong Custer, who fought in the Mexican-American War. In 1907, the United States Post Office moved from its original location to a new building built on Main Street. In 1951, the population of El Reno reached 1,000 residents. On July 16, 1959, El Reno became a city and has been since then. The City Council adopted an ordinance establishing its own fire department on September 14th of that year. In 1962-1964 the city council passed an ordinance to allow for the erection of business buildings within limits of the city Limits which included future annexation by other cities/towns within Oklahoma including Tulsa and Edmond Oklahoma City; this caused many businesses located near downtown to move out as annexation would have required them to conform with new regulations set forth by these new municipalities/cities as well as with state law which did not recognize municipal boundaries within Oklahoman towns or cities
