Today, El Reno is home to many interesting landmarks such as the old courthouse dating back to 1915 and also Stroud Hall State School which was built in 1928 as a result of $1 million earmarked byOklahoma Governor George Custer for the state's schools program during his time as governor. After the war ended, the town expanded rapidly with new construction and development: population reached 100 by 1920. By 1930, El Reno had become one of America's most prosperous cities; it boasted a $25 million economy and an estimated 350 high-rise buildings. In 1941, during World War II,[1] El Reno joined Great Britain in forming the United States Army Air Forces Mediterranean Air Force Base (laterAir Forces Europe). It remained an American airbase untilactivated in 1973.[2]
