El Reno is a town in Lincoln County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,953 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tulsa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The history of El Reno goes back to 1881 when a group of Methodist ministers, led by J.B. Beavers, came to the area and established a mission station called "El Rancho Viejo". In 1897, an act of Congress designated El Reno as the county seat for Lincoln County and it remained that way until 1907 when McKinneyville was founded as a post office on the east side of what is now downtown El Reno. A year later, in 1918, the city of El Reno was incorporated and it has continued to grow since then with its annexation by Tulsa in 1972. Today's downtown contains many interesting buildings from different eras including the old courthouse which served as county courthouse from 1907-1918 and again until it burned down in 1935; The Patton Building (named after General George Custer); The First Baptist Church (founded in 1893); The Masonic Temple (built in 1911), The Elmwood Apartments (a historic apartment building located on Elmwood Avenue) and much more. There are also several small businesses located throughout downtown including intersections with Second Street/McKinneyville Boulevard and 3rd Street/Masonic Temple Boulevard near where they meet uptown near what used to be called 'The Promenade'. Downtown also features several restaurants such as Hi-Top Cafe which serves up delicious food all day long; Granny Smith's BBQ which offers great eats both inside and outside during summer months; Red Lobster; Chick-fil-A; White Eagle Tavern & Grill - all three have outdoor seating for customers who enjoy good weather while eating their favorite dishes indoors or outdoors; Plus there are few but popular bars like Chili's that serve up great food nightly along with live music most nights during summer months or even some weekends during winter months if desired! By 1970, however, El Reno had lost much of its population due to various factors such as economic stagnation and crime rates that rose during this period. In recent years, redevelopment has been underway in downtown El Reno for mixed-use development that would include high-end apartments and businesses along with low-income housing and public access areas. The goal is to create a more urban feel in an area that has long been characterized as rural tobacco country.
