El Reno is a town in Logan County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 3,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tulsa metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what is now El Reno was Wm. H. Goodrich and his family on November 6, 1907. Goodrich named the town after himself, since he had done some development work there before arriving in Oklahoma Territory. He also donated land to the city for municipal purposes; this land became known as Goodrich Park today. The first post office in El Reno opened in 1908, and remained open until it closed on July 15, 1930 due to lack of mail volume from the townspeople- something that has only been repeated twice since then! During World War II both the U.S. Army Signal Corps and Navy Department operated an airfield (USAAF "Alma Mater") within El Reno proper; however, both facilities were destroyed by fire on December 7th 1944 while still under construction! During pre-war years citizens raised money for war food supplies through various means including a hat sales tax (1910), lemonade stand (1920), cattle drives (1930), dances (1945) and bake sales/baked goods drive (1946). The largest collection of period memorabilia ever found outside of an American Civil War battle site was held here during a major search by HeritageQuest Excavations Incorporated in 1984-85 when over 150 items were unearthed including tools used by blacksmiths during Reconstruction Era operations out of Alton Hill Furnace near Tulsa OK...the largest concentration of such artifacts ever discovered anywhere! The community name comes from El Reno Creek which flows through it. The town was named after General George Armstrong Custer who fought in the Mexican-American War and died in 1876 at the Battle of San Jacinto. His remains were brought to El Reno and interred there until 1901 when they were moved to Gray's Summit Cemetery in Denver, Colorado. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census of 2000, there were 459 people, 158 households, and 121 families residing in the town. The population density was 10 people per square mile (4/km²). There were 171 housing units at an average density of 6 per square mile (2/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98% Native American; 1% white; 0% black or African American; 2% Asian; and 0% Hispanic or Latinoof any race. There are 158 households out of which 26% had children underthe age of 18 living with them, 53% were married couples living together, 8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31% were non-families. 24% of all households were made up of individuals and 11% had someone living alone who was 65 years old or older.
