The first school in town was built in 1928 and it served grades K-8 until 1952 when a new school building was constructed. A fire destroyed the old building in 1951 but it reopened as a library in 1955. However, the war led to heavy losses for El Reno which forced the withdrawal of businesses and laid off workers. In 1957, El Reno annexed Haskell County and renamed it "Haskell". During this time there were efforts by City Councilmember Al White to annex other counties but these proposals were never approved by voters due to lack of support from local businesses or officials. During this time there were also plans for a interstate highway connecting Tulsa, Oklahoma and Wichita Falls, Texas but these plans never came to fruition because of opposition from local politicians or business owners who felt that such an investment would increase traffic congestion within their own communities
