With oil discoveries at Anadarko Field (now known as Blackwell uranium mine), oil production boomed in OKC during World War I; however, due to federal water restrictions on new development within Evergreen Park Dammitrict (later Tulsa), Edmond prospered instead due to its location near both reservoirs. In 1923, local resident George Waddell donated land south of downtown to form a park which became later called Memorial Park; this dedication marked the beginning of what would become one of OKC's most vibrant neighborhoods with large scale recreation available within walking distance of home. Oklahoma City annexed Edmond in 1954; however, many residents chose not to move because they felt that their hometown had more culture and history than its larger neighbor. In 2006, Oklahoman John Nichols proposed that all city services be provided through a single public entity with powers granted only unto itself - an idea which received approval from Mayor James Onyeka Jr.. In 2012 mayor Clay Higgins announced plans for a massive renovation/replacement project for Memorial Park which will include complete street reconstruction including new sidewalks and pavement replacement along much of the original route
