During that time, many famous citizens including Orville Kirtland Newton (founder of Kirtland Air Force Base) and J F Cooke (founder/director of Time-Life Books) made their homes hereabouts including Newton’s widow Eleanor Roosevelt while she served as First Lady of America from 1933-1945; Cooke also bought an 86-acre tract northward from town onwhich he established Cooke Oil & Gas Company (now known as Occidental Petroleum Corporation).
