For over seventy years, Edmond, Oklahoma has been a center of optical technology. In 1907, they merged with another German company to form Rheinmetall AG which would become one of Germany's leading industrial firms. During World War I (1914-18), Rheinmetall was contracted by the British War Office to produce large quantities of metal glasses for binoculars and other vision equipment. After the war, they resumed their role as a leading manufacturer of optical products. In 1954, the Optical Instrument Corporation was founded inEdmond by Dr. Charles Hinton and Dr. Leo Straussmann as an effort to bring together several leading American manufacturers of military optics including Marconi Radio Company and GE Aviation Company into one organization under one roof for greater product innovation and efficiency. The Optical Instrument Corporation continued to operate until it was sold to KONE Instruments Incorporated on November 1st 1996!

Edmond was founded on December 6, 1881 by a group of farmers and businessmen. The town was named for Major General Edwin M. Edwards, who had led American forces in the Mexican-American War. The post office was first established in Edmond on January 1, 1882. A cotton gin and distillery were built in the early years of the town, but they closed down in the 1920s. In 1925, the city incorporated as a municipal government with a population of 10,000 people. In 1948, Edmond became an independent city and it has since grown to over 200,000 residents.
