Edmond, Oklahoma is a small city located in the US state of Oklahoma. The population was 2,821 at the 2010 census and 3,187 at the 2015 estimate. It is part of the Tulsa metropolitan area. Edmond's economy is centered around education and health care services. The city has two universities: OU Health Sciences Center and Oral Roberts University. The history of Edmond dates back to 1881 when it was founded as a trading post by settlers on the Canadian River. In 1907, the city was renamed after American general and military leader Edmunds Fordyce. In 1907-1911, Edmond was home to an oil refinery operated by Standard Oil Company which produced gasoline for automobiles in addition to other products such as kerosene and lubricants. The refinery closed in 1911 but reopened in 1925 as Armour Petroleum Corporation’s first crude oil terminal on Owasso Creek near downtown Edmond. In 1945, Armour merged with American Gasoline Co., forming Texaco Incorporated (later ExxonMobil). At that time, Texaco became one of America’s largest energy companies with interests across many industries including petrochemicals, transportation fuels, refining services and retail sales of petroleum products such as gasoline and diesel fuel. In 1951Texaco merged with United States Oil Co., becoming Exxon Mobil Corporation (ExxonMobil).
