In 1886, the Oklahoma Territorial Legislature changed its name to Edmond after then-Governor James Kenedy did so on May 10th that year as part of a program to rename all towns in Indian Territory after US Presidents or Governors who had died in office that year. At one time there were only three such towns--Edmond (Oklahoma), Guthrie (Oklahoma) and Canadian Creek (Kansas)--in Indian Territory. At its peak during World War II Edmond had over 100 businesses including six Tool & Die companies, twelve fabricators and four shingle manufacturers; it also produced munitions for the war effort including planes and tanks. However most of these businesses folded within two years due to wartime competition from other cities across the state of Oklahoma which saw similar technological advances but could not keep up with the demand for products made in smaller communities like Edmond
