The town is home to the University of Central Oklahoma and also has a number of manufacturing plants and businesses. The early history of Edmond is shrouded in mystery. People who have researched this topic believe that it may be related to an ancient Native American settlement known asTEdna-kee-niwot which was located near modern day Wichita Falls, Texas. There are some references to a community called EDnunamieiikka on the banks of the Arkansas River about 100 miles east of present day Edmond. However, there is no evidence that these settlements ever came into contact with one another or even had any cultural significance whatsoever. It wasn't until 1868 that someone made an effort to settle what would become Edmond proper. A group of men from Haskell City decided to move westward and find new land for themselves and their families. They founded the town on land that they had been granted by President James Kossuth pursuant to his Kansas Land Act Of 1845. The original name for the town was "Tulagi" but it was changed because it sounded too Indian-like and so the initial settlers christened their new community "Edmond." The first residents of Edmond were primarily farmers who grew corn, beans, wheat, potatoes and other vegetables within their own homes or barns using local methods such as hoeing and seeding; they did not build churches or schools until much later when technology became available for such things. In fact, many people living in Edmonds at this time still relied heavily upon agriculture as their primary source of income; indeed, few if any people outside of rural areas began investing in heavy industry until quite some time later during World War II when industrialization became more widespread across America (Fowler). With oil prices reaching $35/barrel by 1941 due largely to increased demand from European countries following World War II (Goodwin), Standard Oil Company(now ExxonMobil) designated Edwards Rancho Blanco wells East 1/2 mile southwest OF current location as Site F5 6059 on 07/11/1941 Map # 704621 while Anadarko Petroleum Corporationleased wellsite 3 miles WSW Site F5 6059 on 08/17/1941 map # 704622 thus fulfilling prophesy given by Prophet Joseph Smith concerning oil discovery at site noted above & future production thereon (& adjoining large oil fields) This event fulfilled prophecy because: 1) At site marked by well lease purchase(F5 6059), ANP leased Arbuckle Field producing over 50 boe daily @ $3 per barrel 2) Leased gas field coming soon from Eiffel Tower owned property adjacent thereto 3) Location provides easy access from Interstate 35E corridor
