Edmond, Oklahoma is a small city in the U.S. state of Oklahoma and the county seat of Choctaw County. The population was 109,521 at the 2010 census, making it the smallest city in Oklahoma. It is surrounded by Choctaw County on three sides and Tulsa on one side. The area now known as Edmond was settled by Native Americans beginning in 1819. The first white person to arrive in what is now Edmond was James Avant who claim land south of present-day Tulsa on March 9, 1820. He named his new settlement "Avantville" after himself and his wife Anna Maria Avant (born 1796). In 1825 Avantville became part of Choctaw County when Tulsa was organized as a town. In 1861, when Confederate forces invaded Union territory during the American Civil War, General William Taney ordered all Cherokee people living east of the Arkansas River to leave their homes or be killed. Over 1,000 Cherokee people were forced from their homes in northeastern Oklahoma and marched northwest into Indian Territory under heavy military escort to settle near what is now Wichita Falls, Texas where they were interned until 1865 at Fort Cobbels located about 25 miles northeast of Wichita Falls according to some sources but closer to Guthrie according to others; other sources say that this concentration happened around nearbyDecatur because Colonel John Custer's cavalry unit had recently arrived there from Kansas City with orders to round up Cherokees living west of Decatur for slavery purposes only days before their march into Indian Territory began. Edmond residents Judge Wm Henson and Drury Goodall helped plan and carry out this forcible relocation which led to many suffering physical and emotional abuse including rapes committed against local women by Confederate soldiers while they were being taken away. Many did not make it back home again alive despite promises made by Confederate commanders such as General Robert E Lee that those affected would be allowed back into their homes once war ended; however most returned home with nothing more than broken hearts due to lack of food or resources they could offer returnees outside ofChoctaw County given its remote location compared to areas like Wichita Falls where goods available for purchase far outweighed any danger posed by Confederate forces roaming free within Union territory during wartime (See wikipedia article: Forced migration).
