Edmond is a city in Neosho County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 11,853 at the 2010 census. It is named after General James Edmond who served as military governor of the territory from 1836 to 1840. Ammunition production began in Edmond in 1865 and continued until 1899. In 1898, the Union Metallic Munitions Company built an Arsenal there on East Main Street which still stands today. The Arsenal produced both ammunition and artillery projectiles until 1959 when it closed its doors due to federal regulation of guns. Today, the building serves as a museum open to the public. Edmond, Oklahoma is a city in the US state of Oklahoma. It was founded on November 12, 1907 by the merger of two settlements, Edmond and Whitehall. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. The first European American to live in Edmond was Elihu Root, an American doctor and entrepreneur who arrived in 1881. He built himself a home on what is now First Street and helped found Whitehall settlement in 1886. When he died in 1902, his son-in-law Wm. Huxley took up his father's challenge to found a new settlement nearby that would become known as Edmond. The town center was platted out in 1903 by Huxley with help from fellow settlers John Coker and Jno. Aiken. The town first grew rapidly due to transportation needs; it had one road only until 1915 when it became part of the Tulsa metropolitan area following Tulsa's incorporation into Oklahoma Territory that year. In 1925, the OK Highway System was created and soon Edmond began receiving traffic awards for its excellent connectivity between Tulsa and other areas of the state including Wichita Falls (then Fort Worth), Dallas/Fort Worth (then Plano), Amarillo (then Lubbock), Norman (then Oklahoman City), Dexter (now Jenks) and many more small towns throughout the territory while still remaining within Tulsa's boundaries
Edmond was founded in 1867 by the Canadian-born American lawyer, judge and politician, James K. Polk. It became an important center of oil production in the Oklahoma Panhandle during the 1920s and 1930s. After a period of decline in population and economic activity, Edmond regained some of its former prominence as a cultural and educational center during the 1960s and 1970s.
