In the 1970s, Edmond began to experience economic decline due to increased competition from other cities in the region. However, over the last few years, Edmond has seen growth as a mixed-use community with strong ties to its Ammunition Manufacturing industry. Today, Edmond is an important stop on Highway 3A for drivers traveling southward along Interstate 44.

Edmunds, in honor of his father-in-law and namesake, Edmund Ford. Edmond was founded by Edward C. Edmunds on May 5, 1907 as a small farming community near the mouth of the Arkansas River. The area around present day Edmond had been inhabited for centuries by Kiowa and Comanche warriors who hunted and killed game in the area. In 1868 one of these warriors named Stephen Treadwell established what is now known as Wichita Falls east of present day Edmonds on the Arkansas River where he built a log cabin and began trading goods with nearby Indians. In 1875 Arapaho chief Cochise offered $10,000 for the surrender of all Kiowa and Comanche living within five miles (8 km) of Wichita Falls; this offer was refused by Treadwell because he felt that it would be difficult to find enough horses to bring back any captives alive. Finally in 1887 Treadwell sold his land east of Wichita Falls to J G Bourke for $2 per acre ($40 per sq mi). The first post office in Edmond opened on October 6, 1907. It served as a gift from General James H Sherman along with other small communities within Muskogee County when he donated them during his visit to Muskogee County in 1907–08 under President William McKinley’s Buffalo Bill program called “The Great American Migration” which aimed to help rural America expand into new marketshare opportunities through agricultural education and infrastructure projects such as improved transportation links servicing newly developing areas outside traditional marketshare regions such as Chicago and New York City

In 1933, Edmond re-opened its doors to the public as an alcohol-free community after passage of the 21st Amendment to the United States Constitution which ended Prohibition in America. The city renovated much of its infrastructure including new clinics and schools as part of efforts to become an oasis for residents struggling with Alcoholic Beverage Control Administration (ABC) regulations which were stricter then they had ever been before. In recent years, Edmond has seen growth as a bedroom community for Tulsa based on its location within easy reach of Interstate 40 and other major highways. However, despite this development, it remains one of McAlester County's most poverty-ridden communities with high levels of unemployment and crime rates
Edmond was founded in 1836 by James Fenton and his wife, Catharine. The town grew rapidly due to its location on a trading route between the Indian Territory and Texas. In 1845, Edmond became the capital of OKLAHOMA Territory. In 1907, Oklahoma became a state and Edmond became its capital.
