Edmond is a city in the U.S. state of Oklahoma and the seat of Haskell County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 30,906. The city's nickname is "The Birthplace of Oklahoma." Edmond was founded on October 16, 1881 by George Henniker and father-in-law James A. Weir as a cattle town and grew rapidly due to its location in what were then Comanche County and Haskell County. The first post office was established in 1883, and by 1907 it had become one of the largest cities in Oklahoma with a population of over 100,000. In 1907, Edmond became one of only 12 towns in Oklahoma to be chartered as a city by an act of the legislature; other charter Cities included McAlester (1905), Tulsa (1911), Muskogee (1920) and Jenks (1922). The growth continued through World War II until some local businesses began to go out of business during the war years because they could not compete with production at military bases or elsewhere in the state. However, after 1945 Edmond experienced steady growth again thanks to new housing development which replaced older single-family homes built during World War II; jobs within these new developments led to more families moving into town from outlying rural areas throughout the late 1940s through early 1960s when oil prices were high enough for them to do so without investing money elsewhere. Edmond experienced growth during World War I; in 1917 it became one of 144 townships within Oklahoma to receive a wartime draft exemption and began producing munitions for the war effort. However, when all 254 local governments in Oklahoma were merged into one后，Edmond slipped back into obscurity due to lack of development opportunities outside of military production and small businesses that could not compete against larger cities. In 1929 Edmond reverted back to its original name but instituted an oil refinery program which led to rapid economic growth over two decades; however this prosperity came at a price: air pollution caused by Tulsa's oil refineries made life difficult for residents living near them while joblessness increased among those who had re-enterlled into society after leaving agriculture or industry during World War II.
