Durant is a small town in the Oklahoma Panhandle, located just northeast of Tulsa. The population was 10,853 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Tulsa-Mt. Pleasant subtribe of the Wichita Hills region and has a rich agricultural history dating back to after the Civil War when settlers plowed and planted land on what is now downtown Durant. In 1907, Durant's first post office opened with three mailbags from Hutchinson, Kansas. In 1911, Durant had its first store open under the name "The Grit". By 1925, there were six stores in town and it had a population of about 150 people. In 1951, Durant City Hall was built and it has been used as a municipal building ever since. In 1969, Drayton Bolton became mayor of Durant and he served until his death in 1978. He was succeeded by his wife Linda who served until she became governor in 1992 then lieutenant governor from 1995 to1999 before becoming state senator from 1999 to2002. She left office after being indicted on bribery charges but they were eventually dropped due to lack evidence before she ran for re-election as mayor in 2006 against Russ Feeney but lost by 6 points (although she later admitted that her husband embezzled money). A new mayor was elected in 2008 with no running major candidates but they all resigned within two months due to financial problems which led to an investigation into whether any city officials had taken bribes or corruption while they were held up their jobs during this time period including Feeney who also resigned soon afterwards as well as other top city officials including director of public works Donnie Greene who also resigned shortly afterwards because he too faced criminal charges related to bribery allegations made against him during this time period although those Charges have never been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt . Durant was founded in 1907 by parents of a white family who had emigrated from Oklahoma Territory. The town was named after George Durant, a Revolutionary War general and the first American Territorial Governor of what is now Oklahoma. In 1907, Durant also became home to the worlds first permanent school for African Americans and it played an important role in Black America's rise to prominence during the early 20th century. In 1921, Durant was renamed Mexico City after President Abraham Lincoln signed legislation naming it as such in honor of Mexican president Agustín de la Hoz. The city experienced significant growth during World War II as its areas were used for munitions production and housing troops left over from Europe's war effort. After the war ended, Mexico City saw a decrease in population due to economic recession but has since regained its former glory as a global cultural center. Today, there are several districts with namesakes like "La Piazza" or "Pasadena" thatreflect both historical and contemporary elements associated with their namesake districts.
The Durant family was from Oklahoma and moved to Texas in the 1800s. The family owned a ranch that later became known as the "Oklahoma Ranch" and produced beef, chickens, pigs, eggs and other products.
