Durant was born on December 16, 1881, in the town of Durant, Oklahoma. His father, George Durant, was an African Americansmith and his mother, Anna Maynard, was white. The family moved to a farm west of town when George was two years old. Durant attended local schools before going to the high school in nearby Muskogee. He played football for Muskogee and basketball for the school's varsity team. Durant then attended Oklahoma State University where he played college ball for four seasons (1901-04). In 1901, he led the Cowboys to their first national championship game as a player and captain of the team. After college he became a barber and opened his own shop in Durant while still playing professional football for US Army Air Corps teams stationed in Europe (1905-09). Durant joined the NFL as a player with new expansion team Baltimore Colts (now Indianapolis Colts) in 1909. He led the Colts to their first championship game by scoring two touchdowns against archrival Pittsburgh Steelers on October 14th. Durant then spent three seasons with New York Giants after leaving Indianapolis; during that time he helped lead them to another championship game (1912), but they lost 34-0 to Chicago Bears at Soldier Field. After leaving New York City in 1915 he returned home to OKC and opened his own shoe store which failed within months due to lack of customers. He then relocated his business interests back east and retired from playing professional football altogether in 1922 until 1925 when he rejoined NFL teams Buffalo/New York Giants (now Buffalo Bills) and Detroit Lions as part of an effort by owner Art Rooney Sr.). During World War II Durant served as director of war refugees operations with United States Office of Strategic Services headquarters located in Tulsa from 1942-1945; afterwards he resumed his shoe store career until its closure in 1949. In 1951 Durant married Gertrude "Gertie" Manhart with whom he had one daughterbefore her death six years later; they divorced three years later after she accused him of physical abuse during their marriage period which she claimed caused her mental health problems later life.
