The Durant Riflemen were a post-World War II militia group in the town of Durant, Oklahoma. They were founded in 1948 and active until the early 1990s. The riflemen were composed of men who had served in the United States military during World War II and Korea, as well as those who had been hired by local farmers to help with their farm work. In 1948, gun slings was developed as a way for farmers to arm themselves against possible attack from Native American tribes. The gunmen used this weapon to protect their homes and villages from raiders or other insurgents. In the early years of its use, gun slings was often called "the riflemen's belt." In 1984 he became head coach of the Thunder and led them to their first championship title in 28 years. He retired as head coach after the 1997-98 season. Durant is now a commentator for NBA television broadcasts and has been inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame three times.

In 1865 President Abraham Lincoln issued Executive Order 9386 which limited handgun ownership by U S citizens to those holding state-issued permits only In these years there were also advancements within grenades technology that would soon lead to volley fire grenades becoming increasingly popular amongst armies all over the world

In 1959, Durant was renamed after James Worthy Durant, an American football player who played at Oklahoma State University and later served as president of that school.
