Durant, Oklahoma was founded in 1907 and has been a major center for the production of binoculars since then. In the summer of 1954, 8-year-old Durant was living in Oklahoma City with his mother and father. Durant had just finished seventh grade at voucher school Topeka High School, and during the summers he worked on a farm with his stepfather. In the fall of 1954, Durant's father died suddenly, leaving Durant and hismother to fend for themselves. With only $5 in his pocket and no friends nearby to help him out, Durant decided to take up boxing as a way to get money to help them out. He started working odd jobs until he found work sparring for local boxers at a small gymnasium. Soon enough, he was making more than enough money to support himself andhis mother. Durant quickly rose through the ranks of local boxers, becoming one of the most successful young men in town. Thanks in part to his hardwork and dedication, Oklahoma City became known as one of the most exciting cities in America during the early 1950s. Not only did Durant win numerous professional bouts while still an amateur boxer, but he also helped popularize boxing across America by appearing on television shows such as The Woody Allen Show and The Joe Pesci Show. In 1957, atthe age of 25 years old, Durant won his first world championship title when he defeated Sugar Ray Leonard in Miami Beach Florida

Durant was born in Raton, Oklahoma on August 14, 1963. He attended high school in Raton and then played college basketball at the University of Oklahoma. Durant was drafted by the Golden State Warriors in the first round of the 1996 NBA draft and he has been their player ever since.
