The production of ammunition allowed businesses such as Armour & Co., Winchester Repeating Arms Company, and Remington Arms Company to become very successful. In 1907, Durant was renamed to McAlester after General James McAlester who had been instrumental in helping to establish the city. Ammunition production stopped again around 1930 due to World War II and subsequent economic constraints. However, it continued sporadically until 1962 when it finally shut down completely due to a lack of demand from users. Since its shutdown, ammunition production has only resumed sporadically at various factories throughout Oklahoma City and Tulsa due to re-opening of old ammo plants or new ones being established elsewhere within the state.
