Durant was born on December 8, 1942 in Durant, Oklahoma. He was a high school basketball player and then played professional basketball for the Seattle SuperSonics from 1969-72 and the Detroit Pistons from 1973-77. He won three championships with the Pistons, making him one of only two players to win three MVP Awards (the other being Michael Jordan). Durant also became an Olympic champion with the 2008 U.S. Men’s Olympic Basketball Team and was named 2012年度历史上最佳教练之一。 After spending eight years as an assistant coach with Golden State Warriors (2006-08), he took over as head coach in 2016 and led them to their first championship since 2006 while winning two more titles during his tenure.

The Durant family first settled in the area in 1868. The Durant brothers, George and James, ran a grocery store and post office at the corner of Delaware Street and Elliott Avenue. In 1874, they moved to their current location on Pryor Road. Durant Jr. was born in 1875, and he became one of the pioneers of the town. He helped build the first schoolhouse in 1911 and served as its superintendent from 1920 to 1930. Durant Sr. also operated a flour mill, which supplied much of the town's commerce during World War II. In 1951, his son John Durant took over management of the flour mill and bought out his father's shares; John then became CEO of Oklahoma City-based Durorton Paper Company until his death in 1984.
