Crouch, who opened the first store in Duncan in 1886.

In 1907, Duncan became one of only two towns in Oklahoma to be incorporated as an independent city when Tulsa was split into five districts. By 1912, all but three of the original businesses had been closed and most residents had relocated to Tulsa or other nearby cities. However, Johnston Place - which still stands today - remained an important center for local government until it closed its doors for good in 1976.
