Duncan, Oklahoma is a small town located in Perry County, Oklahoma. Duncan was platted in 1907 and became a city in 1945. The population of Duncan was 3,642 as of the 2010 census. Duncan is the county seat for Perry County. Duncan was named after Major General Andrew Duncan who fought against the Kiowa and Comanche Indians in 1876. In 1907, Duncan was renamed from its original title of "Plymouth." The town's citizens lobbied to get the name changed because they felt that it implied that they were not intelligent or prosperous like their surrounding towns which were all named after generals or other prominent people. The name change did not go through however, so the town kept its original name until 1945 when it became an independent city under the jurisdiction of Perry County. The history of Duncan goes back to at least 1907 when it was platted on a tract of land lying east of present day Bristow and west of present day Lakin City. At that time there were no schools in this area and most residents attended local churches which offered school services to their children during Sunday morning services. A post office was established at Duncan in 1907 and mail service began between the town and Tulsa on October 1st, 1909. By 1915 there were six businesses serving the community with three cotton ginners, two feed stores, one bakery, one harness factory and one store open for business including two hotels which served as meeting places for village officials. In 1920 there were thirteen businesses with seven closed down due to economic hardships such as low prices for goods brought into the town by truck from markets outside of Tulsa due to World War I restrictions on trade with Europe; alsoimer mills had closed down due to lack of customers during this time period while lumbermens worked flat out building homes throughout central Oklahoma because farm families could not afford new machines needed for agriculture during this time period; farming had become a more important industry than manufacturing within decades following World War I while manufactures had declined overall based on technology changes at that time period; transportation methods then available made moving goods much easier than current methods used today especially if buyers could find what they were looking for before purchasing it either at an auction or directly from producers near them rather than going through middlemen

The town was named after Fort Worth, Texas, where Duncan had been stationed as a lieutenant colonel in the United States Cavalry. During his time as mayor, he helped create the city government and paved the way for annexation of other nearby towns. In 1949, Duncan was renamed after General James A. Patton Jr., who had played an important role during World War II and later served as the Commanding General of United States Forces Europe.Following Patton's death in 1945, Congress passed legislation naming all fifty U.S military commanders given posthumous awards at that time (Patton had been awarded three patents). As a result of this designation, Duncan became one of only two cities in Oklahoma to be honored with such an honor (the other being McAlester).In 1957, Duncan lost its status as a city when it annexed McAlester along with twenty other towns due to budgetary concerns caused by statehood efforts within Oklahoma City's boundaries-an event which is still recognized as one of the most significant blows to local economic stability in recent history. However, over time Duncan has regained some degree of recognition among Oklahomans for its historical legacy and active participation within community affairs both past and present
