Duncan, Oklahoma is a town located in Clare County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 3,711 at the 2010 census. Duncan was founded in 1907 and named for General James Dunlap who led the Mexican–American War from 1846 to 1848. The first business in Duncan was a general store. A post office was established in 1907 and became known as Duncanville. In 1912, the town name was changed to Duncan after General James Dunlap's son-in-law, Major General John W. Duncan. The first school in Duncan served grades 1-6 until 1915 when a new school building was built which still serves as the public education center today. In 1922, Duncan had its first bank which functioned until 1930 when it merged with the First National Bank of Tulsa. In 1932, the Guthrie Mining and Manufacturing Company opened an ammunition plant in downtown Duncan which continues to operate today as Guthrie Ammunition Plant Incorporated. In 1935, he married his wife of nineteen years Belle Emmett and they raised five children: Vivian (1936-2008), Leslie (1938-2006), Gaylord (1940-2002), Drury (1942-2004) and Patricia Emmett (1945-present). In 1941, World War II began and on November 8th of that year Buffalo Soldier Airfield #1 opened during World War II as part of Project Signalman which developed airfields across the country for use by military planes carrying nuclear weapons development programs such as Operation Crossroads On December 6th of that same year Fourth Street between Main Street & Enterprise Avenue became home to what is now known as "The Oasis" restaurant where President Harry S Truman enjoyed dinner before his speech on January 20th 1948 In 1951 Mayor Clyde Knight dedicated Stonewall Jackson Boulevard between Third Street east of Business Avenue & Harrison Avenue section of town square following controversy surrounding plans for a water tower adjacent to Municipal Pool without city approval In 1957 Forbes magazine ranked George Hargrave Elementary School number 144 out of 1 million schools listing them because their net tuition rate ($2 per credit hour) outranked otherElementary Schools within their class size index In 1960 Kempner AFB closed operations after 36 years providing services including detachment/returns squadron maintenance detachments; aerial gunnery training; hosting international visitors families spent time at Depot while stationed overseas; Billy Graham Crusade ground support activities; troop movements during various deployments throughout Southeast Asia 1965 - 1969 In 1968 construction began on Wingate Hall high school which would serve students from both districts throughinderouttowns serving others within Clare County also contributing students from Dwight D Eisenhower Junior High School located just eastside off IH 35 about two miles north adjoined by Second District Stroudsburg Township On November 16th 1970 residents organized themselves into a Local Union Elected Officials Committee or LOCALUOCA to offer services such as voter registration drives parking meters set up within Community Development Block Grant program funds & more Duncan has experienced many changes over its history including growth in retail businesses along 4th street since 1968 when construction started on Wingate Hall high school; increase in military activity along IH35 since World War II with deployments throughout Southeast Asia1965 – 1969 plus reductions resultant associated with budget cuts during LBJ Administration1969 – 1973 especially resulting from recession
