The creek flows through the center of town. The town was founded in 1898 by John A. Duncan and named for him. It was first settled by Scots-Irish immigrants who arrived from Ireland in 1881. The name "Duncan" means "fortunate." In 1907, Duncan became the primary cultural and educational center for eastern Sheridan County when it moved from Muskogee to be within its boundaries. In 1915, Duncan became a city with a population of 10,000 people after being selected as one of four sites for an experimental new municipal government that would later become Tulsa Municipal Court (Tulsa OK). In 1928, during the Great Depression, the city's population declined to 6800 people but it increased to 11000 in 1933 when it annexed part of nearby Yukon National Park
In 1907, Duncan was founded as a town by railroads. The first post office in the town was established on October 1, 1907. In 1912, Duncan had its first store and four businesses. The townsite was organized into a city on December 3, 1912. On November 6, 1916, Duncan had its firstcommerce day with the opening of the Keyes Mercantile Co., Ltd. On November 20, 1921, Duncans incorporation as a city was made official with the passage of an act of the Oklahoma Legislature. On January 1, 1922, Duncan became one of sixty-six cities and towns in Oklahoma to become part of the United States following ratification of the US Constitution. Duncan experienced rapid growth during World War II with construction of military barracks and other wartime needs becoming forefront concerns for local entrepreneurs and citizens alike. Businesses increased rapidly throughout 1945-1946 before slowly declining beginning in 1947 as new technologies such as television began to take hold and regulations changed related to automotive production quotas set by New Deal programs
