Duncan, Oklahoma is a small town located in the heart of the Great Plains region. The population was 1,887 at the 2000 census. Duncan's history began with pioneer settlers in 1867 when Major John C. Frémont and his wagon train traveled through the area looking for new land to explore. Duncan was founded on November 15, 1907 by J.D. Macdonald and his wife Jessie Macdonald as a post office with the name of Fort Duncan. The first settler in Duncan was Drury Hargrave who arrived in 1907 and built a cabin near what is now Main Street. By 1912, over 125 people had made their homes in Duncan and it had become an important stop on the main stagecoach route between Wichita and Oklahoma City. The Depression years were tough for Duncan and many residents lost their jobs due to lack of money or illness. However, thanks to some strong leadership within the community, things started to turnaround during World War II when many local businesses became involved in supporting military efforts across America. In 1945, after more than 50 years of continuous growth, Duncan saw its first significant remodel when business owners decided to add a four-story building which served as their social hall until that time. During this time period,Duncan also experienced some heavy involvement with oil production which led to increased economic development over time including several hospitals and businesses catering to those working in both sectors; however, most residents today still focus primarily on agriculture which has been pivotal in keeping Duncan healthy since its founding
The first permanent white settlement in Duncan, Oklahoma was made in 1881 by the Haskell brothers. They arrived with 25 men and built a crude cabin on the edge of town. The town was named after them and it quickly became a center for trading goods and services between the Indians and settlers. In 1889, the Haskell brothers sold their land to J.D. Hinton and his family. The Hinton family would continue to make a significant impact on Duncan through their ownership of various businesses and donations to local charities. In 1907, Duncan became the seat of government for Coweta County when it was created from parts of Osborne County.
