In fact, there is evidence that they originated in Duncan. In 1897, L.V. Beeson developed an electric lightbulb that he called the “Beeson Electric Rifle Lamp”. He patented his invention and sold it to the Western Electric Company for $2 per bulb. The gun light was first used by law enforcement officers in Duncan on October 15, 1897. It consisted of a small battery powered lamp with a long string of white LED lights built into it. The gun light was eventually replaced by the current version which is known as a spotlight or floodlight. The original floodlights were designed to be mounted on trucks so that they could be used at night while driving through dark streets or yards. Duncan is a small town in Oklahoma, located about 25 miles east of the state capital, Oklahoma City. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. Duncan is part of the Woodward County seat and its Micropolitan Statistical Area. The town lies on the west bank of the Arkansas River, opposite Tulsa. It owes its name to General James Duncan who fought in the Mexican-American War and was given land in what is now Duncan by Ulysses S. Grant. The first people to arrive in what is now Duncan were Native Americans who hunted and gathered plants and animals along the river banks. In 1867, white settlers arrived with a Donation Land Act which gave them title to 640 acres (2 km²) of land east of present-day Duncan on which they built homes and started a commercial enterprise. A post office was founded in 1869, but it was discontinued in 1893 because of lack of mail service between Sheridan, OK (then Shawnee County) and Duncan. In 1907 when Oklahoma became a republic, General James Witherspoon led an expedition against Mexico from Fort Gibson near present day Wichita Falls, TX over protest from President Theodore Roosevelt that American citizens should not be forced into war for their country’s agrarian interests as did Mexican president Porfirio Díaz two years earlier through his purchases of public lands known as Menard’s Purchase. As part of this campaign Witherspoon burned down Mexican military posts at Churubusco Creek Bridge six miles north-west of modern day Duncan on November 17th after leading Lieutenant Colonel Harry Ewing's Company K (the 1st Battalion Missouri Volunteer Infantry) across that stream during morning raids against key Mexican forces engaged therein under Lt Col Antonio Lopez de la Vega y Ramos en support thereof; operations being carried out under cover or ambush until darkness descended upon said bridgehead making crossing possible only by swimming across said stream bed aided by moonlight recurring during all crossings). This event symbolized success for Anglo American invaders over indigenous peoples seeking redress for wrongs done throughout their continentlong history culminating with Manifest Destiny policies pursued by UlyssS Grant intended to open up America to European immigration thereby creating new wealth disparities among various social classes antithetical to FDR's New Deal agenda characterized as "The Gilded Age".
